What is Ford luxury brand?

Getty Images Ford is tight-lipped about the future vehicles its Lincoln division is planning. But a small car is likely, and last year’s Lincoln C concept suggested how such a car could look.

The meeting of several hundred Lincoln dealers in Dearborn, Mich. was a somber affair this week focused on cutting dealers and encouraging the remaining ones to invest in their showrooms. But much of the buzz – and anxiety – focused on what new products are to come.

Ford is promising to bring seven new or refreshed Lincoln vehicles to the market in the next four years. The first of the seven – the Lincoln MKX crossover – is just on the showroom floor now. So what’s next?

It’s still hard to say because Ford is cagy about announcing new cars and trucks too far in advance of their launch. Here’s what we know: All of the Mercury cars and trucks – the Mariner crossover vehicle, Milan mid-sized car and Mountaineer full-sized SUV – will disappear as Ford discontinues the brand. On the Lincoln side, the Town Car is still going away, but Ford is keeping the Lincoln Navigator SUV, at least for now.

Ford global sales and marketing chief Jim Farley said Tuesday that Lincoln is still committed to its MK- lineup of vehicles that presently includes the MKX midsize car, MKS full-size sedan, the MKX SUV, MKT large crossover vehicle.

All of the MK vehicles are built off the same basic architecture as other Ford products: MKZ from the Fusion, the MKS from the Taurus and MKX from the Edge and the MKT from the Flex.

We know that down the road Lincoln is getting one new small vehicle off the same underpinnings as a Ford Focus. But it may not be a compact sedan and could be a small crossover vehicles built like a Ford Kuga (available in Europe, not the U.S.) and designed to compete with vehicles like the BMW X3.

Several dealers worried about how quickly these vehicles would be rolled out since a new vehicle program usually takes more than two years to come to fruition.

Rumors swirled early in the week that Ford was exploring a larger sedan akin to the discontinued Continental or a luxury pickup, but Ford officials said that’s not part of the current plans for future vehicles.
